St Louis Wildlife Education: Humane Snake Removal

Few people are able to distinguish between venomous and non-venomous snakes. This leads to a feeling of dread when they are encountered. People assume they are in danger, when in fact most snakes are non-venomous. The best way to establish whether or not you have something to be worried about is to familiarize yourself with the snakes in your area. If you do find yourself with an unwelcome houseguest, you need to find a humane way to get rid of it. Anything else could land you in hot water.

Humane ways to get rid of snakes
Exclusion is the easiest way to keep your property snake free. By closing all possible openings, you will make it impossible for the critters to gain entry. Snakes are most comfortable in damp, dark areas. These are typically found in garages or sheds. This means that these are the areas where you need to be most vigilant. If you do find yourself in the same room as a snake your best course of action would be to remain calm. You can try using a stick to guide the snake towards an open door. If you are unable to get the snake out of the room, it is best to cover it with a bucket and call a professional. The bucket will prevent them from roaming around in your home unsupervised. There is nothing as scary as a snake that you have lost sight of. A professional wildlife removal expert will have the necessary equipment on hand to get rid of your visitor quickly and painlessly.

If you choose to handle the issue yourself, you can invest in a funnel trap. This will allow the snake to enter the trap, but it will be unable to leave. You can subsequently move the funnel outside and allow the snake to be on its way. Make sure that you are not bitten by the snake when you release it. It is advisable to wear thick gloves and not to expose too much open skin as these are the places that the snake will go for. If you are bitten by a snake, it is imperative to get to a doctor immediately. In order to administer the correct anti-venom, it would be best if you identified which type of snake you had encountered.

Keeping your property snake free
In order to make your property less enticing to snakes, there are a few measures that you can take.
· Ensure that your grass is short and that there are no overgrown bushes on the property. These provided the ideal environment for a snake to live in. They could also build a nest and give birth to babies in your garden. Then you might have a larger issue on your hands.
· Repair cracks in the concrete or foundation of your home. These will provide a space for snakes to slither into.
· Do not leave large piles of wood or stones lying around your property. They will hide the snake from view and provides a cool, dark area in which the snake can establish a den.
